BROOKLYN, Michigan -- Csaba Volyka scored his first career ESCORS BallRacing Cup Series victory in his 56th career start Saturday afternoon when he won the Yankee 250 at Michigan International Speedway.
The Hungarian started from the Mindware Pole and led a race-high 65 laps en route to the win. For the second consecutive week, the Mindware Pole winner has led the most laps and went on to score the victory.
With the race mostly under green flag conditions, it set up a round of green flag pit stops with 29 laps remaining. As things cycled through, Trey Eidson, driving the No. 25 Windstream Communications Toyota, had a demanding four-second lead over Volyka. However, driver of the No. 73 VISA Dodge was able to run down Eidson and take the lead for good with 12 laps remaining to score the win and also collect valuable 10 bonus points for the upcoming "Chase for the BallRacing Cup".
Trey Eidson came home in second. Gary Dumont continued his streak of good runs finishing third with Hendrik Gerhardt and Andy Wilke rounding out the top five.
Volyka's win all but solidifies his place in the Chase. Although he just sits 10th in the points, Volyka has a 246-point lead over Hendrik Gerhardt. Former series champion, Gerhardt has a 120-point advantage over Kirk Earls.
It was the eighth win for Dodge at the 2-mile superspeedway and extended the manufacture lead by five wins over Chevrolet in the heart of Motor City. For the second time this season, Michigan International Speedway brought out a first-time winner.
Andy Wilke extended his point lead to 520 points over Giorgio Ponti who is just a slim point ahead of Trey Eidson with three races remaining until the "Chase for the BallRacing Cup".
The ESCORS BallRacing Cup Series heads Southeast for the running of the N2003 Replay Analyzer under the lights at Bristol Motor Speedway next Saturday.
